Enterprise-Wide
Focus
Few
networks comprise just one version of Windows yet there are
important caveats to securing and managing a network of mixed
versions of Windows. For instance, which settings in group policy
are ignored by Windows 2000? You don't have the luxury of supporting
just one version of Windows so why should a training seminar?
Rather than limiting you to just one version of Windows you'll
work on Windows Server 2003 but also learn if and how each point
relates to Windows 2000, XP and even NT.
You'll
learn how to implement Active Directory security, Routing and
Remote Access Service (RRAS), Group Policy, Internet Authentication
Service (IAS), Encrypting File System (EFS), IPSec, L2TP, Certificate
Services, Software Update Services (SUS), RADIUS and more. You'll
learn how to make the technologies work together and leverage
the Windows/Active Directory infrastructure. You'll learn how
to setup 2-factor authentication VPNs, and options for securing
wireless networks including an overview of 802.1x and Wi-Fi
Protected Access (WPA). You'll find out the difference between
an EFS implementation that can be broken in 3 easy steps and
one that is secure. You'll discover secrets for dealing with
the all too vulnerable Administrator account, how to control
the all powerful Enterprise Admins group, dealing with local
account risks and how to identify risks with domain and forest
level trust relationships. You'll learn methods for keeping
systems up-to-date against exploits and how to identify systems
with missing patches.
In
each section Randy will show you the nuts and bolts of a Windows
security technology. Then you'll connect the theoretical to
the real world by identifying risks and holes intrinsic to Microsoft's
design and implementation of that technology as well as how
to apply the technology to solve real problems. You'll also
learn how each technology integrates with the infrastructure
of Active Directory and how to control it centrally using group
policy. You will cover each item in the Microsoft Baseline Security
Checklist as well as the Center for Internet Security's Level
2 Benchmark for Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003
when available.
You'll
discover little known but free tools from Microsoft and others
to help you automate Windows security. For instance you'll learn
about a tool that allows you to query multiple security logs
using SQL like queries. You'll learn how to set up real time
filters that monitor for certain events – without using CPU
cycles – and then take whatever action you specify.
