The EDP Auditors Association, Inc. (The
Association) was founded in California in 1969. Los Angeles was
the first organized Chapter. In early 1975, a small group of people
from the New York metropolitan area brought together by Richard
(Dick) Hirschfield for informal discussions on EDP Audit emerged
as an organizing committee for the New York Metropolitan Chapter
of the EDP Auditors Association. From this nucleus, the tenth
chapter of the EDPAA was formed and chartered in June 1975 at
the 3rd National Conference in Philadelphia.
The
New York Chapter has grown from 17 founding members including
Irving Askinazi, Carl Brose, Richard Carella, Richard Cowell,
Charles Davis, Roy Decker, John Gatto, Eugene McGough, Edward
Meagher, Les Morton, Saul Newman, Jay Rosenthal, Thomas Ryan,
George Sutton, and William Wiegand, to well over 650 in membership,
making it the largest chapter in the Association. Currently, the
EDPAA has over 18,000 members worldwide in over 140 chapters.
In
the early days, informal monthly meetings were held. As the membership
grew, luncheon meetings were held, followed by the first dinner
meeting on February 9, 1976 with 60 people in attendance. In 1994,
the Association name was changed to the Information Systems Audit
and Control Association (ISACA) to reflect current industry terminology
and continued to serve its membership.
Today,
the Chapter holds technical workshops once a month, half-day seminars
timely topics, and membership meetings. Several meetings are held
jointly with local chapters of other associations, e.g. IIA, SIA
and ISSA. In addition, meetings have been extended out to the
suburban areas of Long Island and Westchester to service those
members unable to attend regularly scheduled Chapter activities
in the City. The chapter also publishes a newsletter, which has
won several prizes in recent years in the Association Newsletter
contest.
Each
year, since 1978, the chapter awards the Joseph J. Wasserman Memorial
Award for distinguished contributions to the IS Audit field and
has included such professional luminaries as Donald Adams, Tom
Fitzgerald, Jerry Fitzgerald, John Cullinane, Harold Weiss, William
E. Perry, Michael Sobol, Stanley Halper, Richard Guiltinan, Michael
Cangemi, Steve Ross, Bill Murray, Marty King, John Lainhart, Keagle
Davis, Lily Shue, Stanley 'Stash' Jarocki, Robert Parker, Mike
Donahue, Ira Weiss, Belden Menkus, Kathleen O'Hare, Emil G. D'Angelo,
Thomas A. Dietz, Gordon E. Smith, Peter Wild, S. Rao Vallabhaneni,
and Erik Guldentops.
The
growth and progress of the chapter can be attributed to the dedicated
leadership and efforts of its many officers and workers, particularly
its past president corps including Founder, Carl E. Brose and
the succeeding presidents, John Gatto, Steve Ross, Ed Beddow,
Mike Cangemi, Joe Rodman, Emil D'Angelo, Dave Frost, Maureen Vanacore,
